Maricela Blaylock Christine Isaacson Alejandra Isais Stephanie Leeper Barbara Love Group 3 Project SLIS 5720 Copyright Lesson Plan Analyze Learners General Characteristics Mrs. Smith is teaching a General Education English class, with many levels of learning. Mrs. Smith has the above average learners to students that are coded Special Education. Some of the students dislike school while others need more one on one or peer assistance. Their average ages are between 13 and 15 years old. The students come from low middle class to low socio- economic environments and represents an ethic population that is common in Texas. The class over all is well behaved; however Mrs. Smith is trying to find a better way to engage all her class so that they will excel in school and in the future. Entry Competencies The students in general are able to do the following: Navigate the internet Can text at great speeds, but use text lingo. Can find ways into sites blocked by the school/district Can navigate social media outlets Can download music Can video events with their cell phones Learning styles Mrs. Smith feels that her class could do so much better incorporating the internet; however she is concerned over copyright infringement and Internet safety. She feels that they would benefit from learning copyright laws since she wants all of her students to attend college; this is something they will need in the future. Mrs. Smith would like to present a base for all media copyrights laws and infringements, so that the class can comfortably present in any media outlet that they chose.State Standards and Objectives Standards Curriculum--ELA TEKS 8.23D: students differentiate between paraphrasing and plagiarism and identify the importance of using valid and reliable sources. Curriculum—Technology Applications TEKS 8.5A: students understand, explain, and practice copyright principles, including current laws, fair use guidelines creative commons, open source, and public domain. Technology—National Education Technology Standards for Students (NETS-S) 3: students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. Technology—(NETS-S) 5: students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior. Objectives Using a list of specified websites, the eighth-grade Reading students will work with a partner to examine and summarize key points in the website based on their assigned copyright rule that shows their understanding of that rule. Using MS PowerPoint, Glogster EDU the eighth-grade Reading students will create a slideshow or multimedia poster of their assigned copyright rules, which will be presented to their classmates. Given a quiz, the eighth-grade Reading students will answer multiple-choice questions on copyright rules to demonstrate their knowledge of the copyright principles. Select Strategies, Technology, Media, and Materials Select Strategies Mrs. Smith has selected teacher-centered and student-centered strategies. The teacher-centered strategies include giving a pre-lesson quiz to students to analyze their knowledge on copyright rules. Mrs. Smith will then show a video “Copyright Exposed” from The Library of Congress’ website (http://www.loc.gov/teachers/ copyrightmystery/?#/copyright/). Mrs. Smith will go over copyright using a Prezi presentation. The student-centered activities include partner work to complete a final presentation or poster using Powerpoint, Glogster EDU where they will resume their learning. Select Technology and Media The lesson includes the use of videos and websites explaining copyright rules. It also includes the use of MS Powerpoint software and Glogster EDU website to create a presentation or poster. Students can also use a camera to take pictures or record a video to integrate in their presentations. These tools are aligned with the standards and provide the students with tools to meet the objectives of the lesson. The websites contain government and education domains and provide accurate and current information. The video is designed for students and the websites contain appropriate language for middle school students. The software and websites allow students to be creative in their presentations, are user-friendly, and bias free. Materials The materials for this lesson are a teacher created quiz to pre-assess the students, a post-quiz with case scenarios to prove students have mastered the lesson, and a teacher created presentation to explain copyright rules and infringement. Mrs. Smith will also provide students with a copy of “Copyright and Fair Use Guidelines” from www.techlearning.com to give them an easy to read checklist of Do’s and Don’ts concerning copyright and fair use. Utilize Technology, Media, and Materials Preview Technology, Media, and Materials Mrs. Smith will preview any and all websites that she will use with her class to ensure that all websites are appropriate. She will review the presentation that she is giving to the students so that she is familiar with the information she is giving them. Prepare Technology, Media, and Materials Mrs. Smith will set up her presentation the day before she gives the lesson to make sure that things are working correctly. She will then have the lesson ready to go and practice it the day of the presentation. Prepare the Environment Mrs. Smith will make sure that her classroom is set up so that it functions correctly for her lesson. Desks will be turned to ensure that students can see the board. Since she is planning to have the students work with a partner and then present their information, she will make sure that students have laptops to use and that they can easily sit next to their partners to work. Prepare the Learners Mrs. Smith will give her students the objective for the day (as listed in the standards and objectives). Together as a class, they will review this objective so that students know what is expected of them by the end of class. Mrs. Smith will give students directions as to their assignment and will inform them of the quiz they will take after all presentations are complete. Provide the Learning Experience Mrs. Smith will provide both teacher-centered and student-centered learning experiences. She will model what she wants the students to do, then have the students follow her example and gradually release the responsibility to the students. Students will present their information and prove that they have mastered the objective by taking the quiz. Require Learner Participation Student Practice Activities The students in Mrs. Smith’s class will use computers, the Internet, a printer, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, or Glogster EDU, and a smart board to complete their assignment. Each student is given a rubric with acceptable websites (see attachment) to begin the assignment. In partners, the students will collect appropriate data over citation rules from four of the websites listed. The data will be transferred to a Microsoft Word document and printed. After approval from teacher/librarian, the students will use either Microsoft PowerPoint or GLogster EDU to present the information gathered to the other students. All of the activities allow for the students to practice and relearn how to gather information over copyright information for future use. Feedback Mrs. Smith and the librarian will provide constant feedback and support throughout the project. Students will follow along with rubric and checklist on a daily basis to make sure they are comprehending assignment and following along correctly (see attachment). Presi Presentation:
